Chapter Ten

Wolf Bite

“What do you mean?” I ask as the thought that someone had planned for one of us to get trapped within the walls sinks in.

“Arianthe was an innocent bystander. The dark magick was intended for either you or Luke.” Claudette replies with a sigh.

“Can you tell who is behind the attack – or whatever you want to call it – tonight?” Luke asks as he wraps his arms around me protectively.

“The spell was cast by a Voodoo Priestess that knew enough to hide her identity. Beyond that, anyone could have hired her. I’ll do some digging in the morning. In the meantime, the house is cleansed of all dark magick. I think it is best if your father and I stay here the rest of the night, just to be on the safe side.” Claudette says.

“I think Ari should come back to my place so I can keep an eye on her,” Wes suggests.

“I agree,” Claudette replies. “She might suffer from some side effects from the encounter. Someone should watch over her.”

“I want Keiran,” Arianthe murmurs as she wraps her arms around herself.

“We can call him from my place,” Wes tells her as he hands her the small duffel bag she brought with her from Michigan.

“Luke and I will double up the protection spells on the house in the morning,” I vow. Shaking my head in disgust I look up at Luke, “I thought we were past all this kind of crap.”

“I know babe, but we’ll figure it out.” Luke squeezes me tighter.

Luke and I get up at dawn after a fitful sleep. Luke thrashed around in his sleep preventing me from getting a restful sleep. Not that I could have, with thoughts of monsters lurking in the walls filling my head.

Joining our power together we strengthen the protective boundaries around the house and the yard. Once that is finished we use Voodoo to add an extra layer of protection.

“I’m so tired,” Luke groan as we slump down on the porch steps.

“You were thrashing around so much I’m surprised you slept at all,” I remark.

“Bad dreams,” Luke mumbles.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I ask as I play with the frayed hem of my denim shorts.

“No,” Luke answers quickly.

Claudette sticks her head out the front door, “I’ve made breakfast and it’s on the table. Lizette, would you go get your father? He’s in the study.”

“The study?” I echo in confusion.

“I’ll show you. I stumbled across it last night,” Luke explains as he gets up and pulls me to my feet.

Claudette disappears back into the kitchen as Luke and I come to a small door partially hidden within the staircase.

“I thought this was just storage,” I say as Luke reaches for the round brass doorknob.

“So did I, but it’s purposefully misleading,” Luke replies as he pushes the door inward and ushers me inside.

As I duck inside the low ceiling gives way to a large sunlit room filled with books. In the center of the room sits a cherry wood desk topped with a top-of-the-line computer.
