Kai smiled. “What, and let me steal your job? Listen you have all the experience and accomplishments necessary to get a great job. You just need to work on explaining better how you added value. Practice putting those great things into words. You had no problem when I pushed you. You just need to practice more.”

“Let’s move onto the last part,” Kai continued, “which we can do pretty quickly here. How will you make an impact going forward? You need to really know the company you’re interviewing with and the things they care about.”

Song tapped her pen. “Everyone says we should know these companies, but how do we do that?”

Kai gave her a long, hard look. “You mean to tell me with the Internet at your fingertips—access to free information about literally anything—you can’t find out what Eli Lily cares about? I probably could tell you how many kids their CEO has with a single well-phrased Google search. Be a detective! Use our career lab, a website like Glassdoor, the company blog, and reviews written by past summer interns and hires. The truth is out there.”

Song whined, “It just takes so much time. What am I even looking for, specifically?”

“I have two more sheets for you: a grid and a diagram. The first one has the attributes they care about in new employees. Some companies emphasize grit and teamwork; others emphasize a can-do attitude and perseverance. The words and phrases they use to describe their ideal employees? Those are the attributes you want. We saw this grid in the workshop. There’s space at the bottom to add attributes that may matter more to your target company.”
