When we say that social relationships are material in “some versions” of class theory, we are drawing on the Marxist analysis that the social relationships of class are “material.” However, as we try to show in this book, that is a diminished view of class. Yes, the social relationships of class are material in that they are tied to property, wages, profits, and real material gains. But they are social constructions too, in which the acceptance of the relationship is imagined to be brought into being. See the Chapter 4, “Culture,” for a more detailed discussion.
