Chapter 10

“Just a few more blocks,” Cara assured Nick. She swerved the van around a slow moving Winnebago. Her death-before-yielding driving ethic left Nick no sane option but to brace himself in his seat and check his door lock every two minutes to confirm that it remained down.

His mind searched for a distraction. “Stupid question time. You’ve confirmed this meet up? With Antigone? Right?”

“It’s okay. Caution. Paranoia. They’re both virtues for people in our predicament.”

“So, it’s settled. One hour. Then it’s done.”

“Yep. I messaged her. She responded. We I.M.’d until three in the morning. It’s a go.”

“I.M.?”

“Instant message. You need to leap into the 21st century.” She hit the accelerator. “I doubted that she’d agree to meet on such short notice. Turned out to be a cinch. This girl’s got to be one heck of a danger junkie.”

“O-o-kay.” He leaned with the car as she swerved around another slow-mover, but resisted pinching his eyes shut. “I take it you spun her one thrilling web of lies.”

“Something like that. I told her that I, as Lenny, of course, had big plans underway that she wouldn’t want to miss out on.”

He turned to comment but got caught up in appreciating how she leaned slightly forward, so intent on her driving. Her eyes wide, her smooth skin, her . almost touching the steering wheel. He swallowed. “I-I’m jealous. I’ve always sucked at lying.”

A flush reddened her cheeks. “It’s a gift. Truth is, I kept it vague but hinted that what I had in the works would result in mass destruction and mountains of dead humans.”

Her sentence faded into a half hummed–half sung rendition of a Marilyn Manson song, then switched to one of Conor Obert’s indie oldies.

“I was on a roll. It was a challenge to convince her that, despite my tame internet profile, I was in reality a bloodthirsty fiend of darkness. That is until she brought up the name of some bloodsucker big wig, Kostoch, or something to that effect. After I let it drop how I happened to be his number one fan and that he’s even underwritten my latest venture, she was only too eager to hook up.”

Kostoch. Uh-oh. I tried to smile around my brain-freeze. “I guess whatever works. Go on.” How much worse could this get? And why not? This whole thing is insanity!

“Just in case things went south, I didn’t want to get stuck anywhere without lots of witnesses. Jeez, jerko! Can you drive any slower?” Again she changed lanes then swerved back in front of the old guy who honked. “So, when she brought up meeting places, I threw out all the big names. The Slowdown, the Waiting Room.”

Prying his fingers from the dashboard, he decided he liked looking at her more than watching the road. “I’ve heard of those.”

“I’ve seen ‘em. Dad treats me to the occasional all-ages concert as thanks for helping him with his research.”

“Ya know, your dad actually sounds fun. I mean, really.”

He liked the warm glance she threw him and the little smile he had created.
