Chapter 10: Failure

Randy awoke to the sounds of a door closing and the voice of a man: “Sorry about that; my last customer was a little slow on the draw today—”

Randy slowly opened his eyes and looked around warily. His vision was a mess, and he could not see anything around him. “What….?” he asked groggily.

He looked up and saw a man in a green robe, and he was immediately reminded of Mr. H and jumped back, but then he remembered who the Clocksmith was, and he panicked.

“No need to be alarmed!” said the voice pleasantly.

Randy slowly looked up as his vision returned. The Clocksmith stared at him with his long white beard and a green cloak with a hood which he wore over his head.

“You are right on time,” said the man. He looked at his wrist (which was covered in watches) and then said, “Well, 12 seconds late now…”

“How do I keep coming back here?” asked Randy.

“You got here by not being here, and you not being here –”

“…Caused my arrival. So I’ve been told,” replied Randy.

The Clocksmith reached over and picked up another clock and said, “This is your clock, right here!” He looked it over and smiled to himself. “Yes, yes… you could not have come at a better time, number 3!”

“Do you number all of my doppelgängers to keep us all straight?” asked Randy with confusion.

The Clocksmith looked up in surprise and said, “You are quite the sharp one!” He walked over to Randy, then laughed, “Of course I do! There are so many of you it would be impossible to call you all ‘Randy’ without messing it up!”

He looked Randy up and down and said, “Now… I keep forgetting that important something I was supposed to tell you… It involved Mr. Conz…”

“Mr. Conz?” asked Randy sharply. “Did he cheat? Am I being cheated? Does it have to do with the contract??? What?”

“I seem to remember more and more after each version of you returns,” replied the Clocksmith. He stared off into space, lost in thought. “Perhaps number 4 will know!” Without another word, he shoved Randy out of his shop and shouted, “I will let you know when you come back again!”

Without another word, the door closed. This time, the building didn’t vanish. It was still there. Randy frowned and stared at the Clocksmith’s shop for a moment and slowly approached the door. He turned the handle, and to his dismay, there was nothing on the other side. Only the other side of the lot where the building stood. Randy frowned and looked around and realized the door and the front wall were all that remained of the Clocksmith’s shop. Once again, part of the building had vanished without a trace.

He sighed and turned towards the Navigator, which was giving directions to the—

Randy stopped. It was directing him towards the clock tower where the Timepiece of the Universe was kept. He immediately traced the directions with his finger, memorized them, and took off running
