Why Handstitching?

I’m a dedicated handstitcher. I believe I connect in a more solid way with my artwork when I’m forced to slow down and spend the time it takes to cover fabric in handstitching.

There is an intense meditative quality to the act, and no two stitches are the same, which leaves a more personal mark on the work. Plus it makes projects portable. In the little moments when I’m waiting for an appointment or visiting with friends, I can stitch on my project. It’s a great way to squeeze in art making when you have a busy schedule.

This is not to say that I don’t use machine stitching in my work. I do, but I almost always offset it with handstitching and keep it very simple.

I find that handstitching is becoming a lost art, and it’s my sincere hope that you’ll give it a shot. You may find that you like it as much as I do.
