As we walk back to my apartment, sharing nothing but total silence, Mia approaches us from the corner of the street. Krissy looks more than relieved to see her best friend.

I stand back and watch them hug. After a few seconds, Mia pulls away and smiles at me. “Hi, Damon. Nice to see that you're looking after my friend.”

“He is not looking after me,” Krissy says assertively. “He’s just helping me out.”

“With what?”

“Personal training,” I cut in before Krissy can respond.

A wicked grin pulls at Mia’s lips. “Sounds fun.”

“Whatever,” Krissy says.

“Do you want to be Krissy’s plus one for my wedding?” Mia asks me.

I glance at Krissy and see that her cheeks are now fire-engine red.

Fuck it.

“I’d be delighted,” I tell her.

“Hey, shouldn't you wait for me to ask you first?” Krissy says to me.

Mia bats her hand. “Don’t be a killjoy. He’s coming.”
