The Social Brain
Back in the introduction I proposed that Adam Smithâs view of interpersonal behavior (Smith, 1759) was very similar to that espoused by more modern social psychology theorists in that it incorporated the somewhat obvious view that people have a âtheory of mindâ (TOM) about both themselves and other people. In recent decades this idea has become somewhat of a cornerstone in the empirical and theoretical understanding of interpersonal behavior. An imputed TOM refers to the apparent ability that people have to be able to understand that both they themselves and other people know things, believe things, feel things, and intend to do things. That the mental states attributed to others may be congruent or incongruent with oneâs own mental state in the same or similar circumstances. And that such knowledge can be strategically useful to the individual. That is, such understanding is assumed to bestow some advantages on the entities that possess it.
