It is possible to travel from the Tonkin Coast to Laos. Around 100km (60 miles) west of Vinh is Cau Treo, and a bus runs from Hanoi to Vientiane, passing here on the way, though it can be a gruelling 24-hour journey. Lao visas may be obtained at this point, but tourists entering Vietnam here will need to arrange visas in advance – e-visas are accepted at this crossing, but do check well ahead of your trip.

Dong Hoi

About 55km (34 miles) from Phong Nga, quaint Dong Hoi ‡ [map] makes an excellent base for day trips to the caves and exploring the DMZ. There was once an ancient citadel here but little remains other than moats and vestiges as a result of the Vietnam War. The local beach, Nha Le, offers beautiful blue waters and smooth white sand – there’s little there in the way of service and accommodation, apart from Sun Spa Resort.
