Cua Lo Beach

About 20km (12 miles) north of Vinh is Cua Lo Beach, which, like Sam Son Beach, attracts mostly local Vietnamese. The waters are clean and the stretch of sand is inviting, but the karaoke bars, massage parlours and general tackiness may deter many.

Quang Binh Province

Quang Binh province was one of the earliest battlegrounds between the Viets and the Champa, in their struggle to control Vietnam. Although now a quiet backwater, it was the home of several well-known historical figures in Vietnam, including the poet Han Mac Tu, former president Ngo Dinh Diem, and one of the most respected Communist war veterans in the country, Vo Nguyen Giap.

The Unesco World Heritage Site Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park fl [map] was created to protect some of the world’s most extensive karst landscapes. The park is best known for its caves, including Phong Nga, which is home to the world’s longest underground river, and the world’s largest cave passage, Son Doong, discovered by British explorers in 2009. It is possible to explore both the huge cave and river with guided tours. A boat tour of the cave is the highlight of any visit to this region.
