Opportunities to see the masks being used in the dances for which they were originally designed are sadly difficult to come by. The Bandu Wijesuriya Dance Academy, opposite and under the same management as the Ariyapala and Sons Mask Museum, sometimes stages performances of traditional Kandyan and Low Country dances during the tourist season (Nov–Apr). Even if nothing formal is scheduled, some of the school’s 250 pupils are put through their paces from around 3pm for an hour or so, Monday to Friday, and rehearsals are open to visitors.

Some 6km (3.5 miles) inland from Ambalangoda, the obscure Galagoda Sailathalaramaya Temple (donation) at the village of Karandeniya is the unlikely home to Sri Lanka’s largest reclining Buddha, an impressively elongated figure measuring some 35 metres (115ft) in length, and dating back to around the beginning of the 18th century.
