In most cities the metro is a dull way to get around: there is not much for a visitor to look at 20 metres (65 ft) under the ground. In Moscow, on the other hand, the metro is something of a tourist attraction. The stations are well known for their sumptuous and unique decoration. Where else in the world is the rumbling approach of the train heralded by a delicate tinkle of chandeliers?

The metro is a good way to travel for practical reasons, too. During the Russian winter, it makes sense to do your waiting in the damp warmth of the underground rather than at a freezing bus stop. Throughout the cold months armies of babushkas (grandmothers) are employed to mop up the slush which passengers carry into the station vestibules on their winter boots.

The metro has its own very definite etiquette. When it comes to boarding a train it is every man or woman for themselves, and in rush hour it is a scrum between the people getting on and those getting off. But once on the train, invalids, pensioners and those with children or with child have an indisputable right to seats. This right is in the “Rules For The Use of the Metro”, a Soviet-era document which is displayed in every train. The first rule of the metro states, in true bureaucratic fashion, that passengers must obey the rules.
