Little Sark

Beyond La Coupée Little Sark is even more peaceful than the main island. Enjoy the views of neighbouring islands as you follow the sunken lane to La Sablonnerie, a charming hotel with restaurant and tea gardens. A left turn here brings you to the tall granite chimney pots and ruins of Sark’s silver mines, growing out of the wild bracken and brambles. Silver and copper were discovered on Sark in the 1830s and Cornish miners were brought over to work it. But no viable quantities were found, ten miners were drowned in 1845, and two years later, when the galleries collapsed and flooded, the ill-fated mining company went bankrupt.

Few make it as far as the southern tip of Little Sark and Venus Pool, a large natural rock pool at the base of the nearby cliffs. The 10ft (3-metre) -deep pool is uncovered for 2.5 hours either side of a low tide and visitors frequently fail to find it (ask locally about the tides and check the way). When the grass runs out and gives way to bare granite, cairns mark the best route. Reaching the pool involves a scramble, but it’s a lovely spot to swim.
