Ghent’s tourist office is based inside the renovated Oude Vismijn (Old Fish Market) on Sint-Veerleplein. It is open daily Apr–Sept 9.30am–6.30pm, Oct–Mar 9.30am–4.30pm.

The Belfort and Lakenhalle

Opposite the cathedral, the Belfort B [map] (Belfry; daily 10am–6pm), completed in 1380, has since become the pre-eminent symbol of the city’s independence and houses one of the best carillons in Belgium. You can view the 53 bells on the fifth floor using the glass lift and ascend to the top of the 91m (298ft) tower for spectacular views across the city.
