Eco-adventure is scrawled across this landmass in the far north of the Philippines. Though linked to Manila by road, the region still stands out for its relatively isolated mountain forests and undeveloped wind-sculpted beaches. Travelers also go to see a series of deep caves, through which rivers may run. Almost the entire northeast of Luzon Island is characterized by rolling hills, secret beaches, wide vistas, and dramatic drops into the rolling Pacific Ocean.

The Cagayan valley is a structural depression, located between tributaries of the Cagayan River flowing from the Cordillera Central mountains in the west, the thickly forested Sierra Madre mountains towering over the Philippine Sea in the east, and the Caraballo mountains in the south. Such isolation has kept the region rural and disconnected from goings-on elsewhere in the country.

Like much of the Philippines, the far northeast leans largely on farming. Growers have historically prized the region for tobacco, and tilapia fish aquaculture has been added to the cornucopia. Tourism is starting to peek through as a money-maker as visitors try beaches and mountain treks.

Cebu Pacific flies from Manila to the northeast’s regional hubs of Cauayan and Tuguegarao. Victory Liner (tel: 02-363-1506) runs coaches from Manila to Tuguegarao. Local buses, jeepneys, and tricycles handle shorter trips within the region. Private pumpboats link mainland Luzon to its islets.
