Europe’s longest floodlit toboggan run is from Preda station on certain winter nights when the road down to Bergün is closed to traffic. The railway obligingly ferries passengers and toboggans up the hill, and the 6-km (3.7-mile) road is lit with lanterns.

After Susch is the junction for the Vereina Tunnel line through to Davos, which has reduced the journey time between Zürich and St Moritz/Scuol-Tarasp for those who don’t mind missing the scenic pleasures of the Albula Pass route. The villages of Guarda and Ardez have both received awards for the way they have conserved their architectural heritage and are a pleasure to explore on foot.

When the sound of the train indicates the end of the long Tasna Tunnel, look to the right: as it crosses the highest bridge on the line before diving into another tunnel there is a magnificent glimpse of one of Switzerland’s most romantic castles, at Tarasp. There is also a good view of the castle from the station at Ftan, situated so far below the village that the latter has a bus service from Scuol.
