Cairns Swimming Lagoon

When you reach the Cairns Harbour wall, turn left and follow the sweeping path along the shore. At high tide, the water laps the narrow sandy beach and when it recedes, Cairns’ famous mudflats are exposed. The mud is a feeding platter for hundreds of water birds, some of which migrate from as far away as Siberia, and even the occasional crocodile (keep your eyes peeled).

Cairns is blessed with year-round warm temperatures, ranging from 25–33°C (77–91°F), but in summer, humidity often gets extremely high, and it can be huge relief to see the metal fish spraying water, which herald the Cairns Swimming Lagoon 2 [map] (Thur–Tue 6am–10pm, Wed noon–10pm, free). Swimming in the stinger-free clear waters of this vast saltwater pool and lying around on the manicured lawns are virtually mandatory for all visitors, but you might also want to check out The Herd, a delightful granite sculpture at the tail end of the lagoon.
