Heading two blocks west at Xinle Road are the sapphire-hued onion domes of the former Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God. Stripped of its former glory, part of this 1931 Russian Orthodox church is now home to a Shanghainese restaurant called The Grape. Inspired by the Cathedral of the Saviour in Moscow, the church held more than 2,500 worshippers in its heyday. Locals say its paintings of six cute cherubim and seraphim, now long gone, resembled the faces of the local artist’s lovers.

Opposite at No. 82 Xinle Road is the boutique Mansion Hotel ^ [map] (Mansion Fandian), which occupies a meticulously restored old manor house. The fifth-floor restaurant offers exquisite views of the city from both the dining room and terrace, but the food is just so-so – stick with a drink.

Continue down Xinle Road and take a detour left along Donghu Road towards the old wing of the Donghu Hotel & [map] (Donghu Fandian). The main hotel building got a makeover in 2016 and a park on the corner of Donghu and Huaihai was opened to the public – it’s a popular spot for couples to dance in the evenings. Donghu Road is a bustling restaurant and nightlife haunt. At No. 20, in a 19th-century villa tucked away from the main road, is hot Spanish restaurant Elefante, along with Japanese sensation Sushi Oyama on the floor above. Sichuan Citizen, Liquid Laundry and clubs Le Baron and Craft are other local favourites in the immediate vicinity.
