Bars and Cafés
Alba
70 Gulou Dong Dajie. Tel: 6407-3730. 2 [map], B3
This kooky café and bar has good Wi-fi, decent coffee, home-cooked lunches and a lovely chilled rooftop terrace. Best things on the menu are the pick’n’mix Sunday brunches and the chocolate pudding.
Bed Bar 床
17 Zhangwang Hutong, Jiu Gulou Dajie. Tel: 8400-1554. 3 [map], B2
One of the top spots in town to be seen, were it not for the murky interior. A fashionable clientele lounge on kang-style beds and sip mojitos and other well-prepared cocktails.
Drum and Bell Café
41 Zhonglouwan Hutong. Tel: 8403-3600. 4 [map], B2
One of the best spots in town to enjoy a coffee or a beer on a roof garden overlooking a public area between the ancient Drum and Bell towers where locals practise t’ai chi, spin diabolos and gossip.
Café De La Poste 云游驿
58 Yonghegong Dajie. Tel 6402-7047. www.cafedelaposte.net. 5 [map], C2
This bistro comes alive after 8pm with boisterous French expats. In the summer, the music is turned up, the tables are moved to the side and the dancing begins.
Great Leap Brewery 大跃啤酒
6 Dou Jiao Hutong. Tel:5717-1399. www.greatleapbrewing.com. 6 [map], B3
A rough-and-ready microbrewery started by an American and set in a lovely hutong courtyard. Beers come tinged with flavours such as honey and peppercorn.
MAO Live House
111 Gulou Dongdajie. Tel: 133 6612-1459. www.maolive.com. 7 [map], B2
This no-nonsense rock venue has become a mainstay in Beijing’s music scene. Cheap drinks and loud music attract a young crowd.
Mao Mao Chong 毛毛虫
12 Ban Chang Hutong. Tel: 186-1007-0861. www.maomaochongbeijing.com. 8 [map], B3
This cosy bar in the hutong has inventive cocktail infusions and, if the kitchen is open, the best pumpkin pizzas in the world. Very popular, so get here early to grab a seat.
Passby Bar 过客
108 Nanluoguxiang. Tel: 8403-8004. 9 [map], B3
The first bar on Nanluoguxiang is still a great place for a drink. The inside courtyard is now under glass but there’s a rooftop bar and a fair-sized library of travel books.
