Peliatan

Continue west on the main road, and turn left to enter Peliatan ‹ [map] village, which gained international fame for its legong dancers who took New York and Paris by storm while on tour during the 1950s. Today, the daughters of these performers, along with their cousins and friends, continue the tradition. The original dancers were all trained under the discerning and critical eyes and ears of the late Anak Agung Gede Mandera. For decades, Gung Kak, as he was affectionately called, groomed both dancers and musicians alike, and his legacy lives on today in Peliatan. One of the few all-women gamelan troupes (gamelan wanita) in Bali rehearses here; many of them are relatives of Gung Kak.

At the main crossroads, stop for a look at Puri Agung Peliatan, the palace of the royal family. The kecak dance is held in the front courtyard every Friday night.
