Every day at sunset at Summerland Beach (tel: 03-5951 2800; www.penguins.org.au; daily dusk; bookings 10am–5pm) on Phillip Island, hundreds of little penguins – we’re not to call them fairy penguins any more – waddle from the waters of the Bass Strait to their protected burrows in the sand. Wings outstretched, they strut in small groups up a concrete ramp past throngs of curious human onlookers. This has developed into a serious, packaged tourist spectacle: there can be days when humans outnumber the penguins. In response to this there are now elite ticketing options, involving a ‘penguin sky box’ or a small-group ‘more personalised intimate wildlife experience’, which sees wealthier tourists led to a quiet beach by their own ranger.
