The taped introduction of the tour reveals a China on the brink of modernity. Among the plush Chinese carpets, artwork and gleaming blackwood furniture – all supposedly originals despite the house having been looted by the Japanese – is a 1924 picture of Sun and Soong in front of the first aeroplane in China.

A more contemporary lifestyle hub in the Xintiandi mould features a series of restaurants (California Pizza Kitchen, Boxing Cat Brewery) and shops linked by outdoor piazzas, the Hotel Massenet, condominiums and office space, and vintage-style villas (some historic, some exact replicas).

Tree-shaded Sinan Road, lined with houses that are inspired by a dozen different architectural styles, is also the site of the former Residence of Zhou En-lai. This is where Zhou, the first prime minister of the People’s Republic of China, lived in 1946 when he was head of the Shanghai branch of the Communist Party.
The house, a Spanish-style villa, is simply furnished, with most of it devoted to the underground revolution. Communist newspapers were produced on the second floor, and the third floor housed a dormitory for comrades who needed a safe house. From the porch, the Kuomintang surveillance house across the road that kept a constant watch on Zhou is visible.
In a separate building, an exhibition hall documents Zhou’s life; a statue of the young Zhou with fresh flower offerings at his feet is a testament to his status as one of China’s best-loved leaders.
South & west of Fuxing Park
South of Fuxing Park are a number of sights that are fairly dispersed. There is funky art, shopping and dining at Taikang Road and Tianzi Fang but also old-world charm at the former Ruijin Guesthouse and Taiyuan Villa.
