The monarchy chose Dusit as the new area in which to build palaces and official buildings from the reign of King Chulalongkorn. The king was widely travelled and incorporated ideas he found abroad into all aspects of Thai life. Consequently, the royal quarter of Dusit is unlike any other area of Bangkok. The streets are modelled on the wide boulevards of Paris and the architecture rises in classical lines more associated with London or Rome.
