Chapter Twenty-Five - Upgrade

As they hurtled towards the ground, she saw the guards below reacting and caught the glint of a mirror being pulled out. She supposed, then, that there was no need for her to announce her arrival. There were a few townspeople paying their respects at a small shrine that had been erected at the base of the tree, and as they landed and she let the bubble drop, she could see that the crystals were playing images inside. One older couple was weeping as they watched the last message from their family.

The guard who’d pulled out the mirror stepped forward, bowing to her as he spoke. “Duchess Jade, the king has invited you and your companions to a breakfast meeting at House Whitby. If you’ll follow me, I’ll guide you there.” Jade paused, considering. While the guard was being respectful, he hadn’t actually asked for her opinion, as if it was just a given that she would follow him. Granted, it was the king, and she couldn’t imagine anyone telling their king no without a really good reason. Her fit of pique was probably unwarranted. He was the king, after all. Just because she had a good relationship with him generally didn’t mean that she needed to put her foot down on something so silly.

Shooing away her irrational thoughts of being insensible, she nodded. “Very well, please do so.” She paused, her brain shuttling through all the people she had met. Whitby sounded familiar, but not overly so. Someone she’d only met once… her brain finally seized upon the memory of the teacher’s lounge and meeting a kind older gentleman who taught life magic. She’d never made it to his class, given that she’d gone on a hunt the day it happened, and then it’d been canceled the next week. Curiously, she asked, “Does House Whitby have anything to do with Duke Whitby, the teacher at Dracona?”

Briar was keeping quiet next to her, just silently backing her up in whatever her decision was. As they started to walk, the guard in front, he kept pace beside her. The guard turned back, a look of surprise fleeting across his face momentarily before he schooled his expression. “Ah yes, I forgot for a moment that you were a student of Dracona. Yes, this is the estate of Duke Whitby’s second son, Count Brayden Whitby.” Jade nodded, and they continued walking out of the woods. She was considering offering to fly them there, but decided to wait on that for now.

Briar was obviously taking the time to study the individual trees as they passed, and she couldn’t help but whisper curiously, “What do dragons do when they die?”

Looking a little more somber, Briar glanced back, obviously looking at her changed Basaigh before he smiled softly and replied, “Where do you think the first Basaigh came from? Our traditions are very similar, although our burial ground is considered holy ground.” Eyes wide, Jade took that in as she, too, glanced back at the Basaigh.
