THE JIHADIST CRITIQUE OF THE FUNDAMENTALIST ULAMA
The critique of democracy (see chapter 4) goes hand in hand with the critique of those Ulama (Islamic jurists) who promote Reformist ideas and those Fundamentalists who try to find compromises between their religious views and modern trends toward political participation (like elections, political parties, etc.). Among the latter, Qaradhawi, close to the Muslim Brotherhood, is one of the most prominent figures. Jihadist Ulama and intellectuals cross swords with him as they did with Bin Baz, the Saudi religious authority, before his death in 1999. One of the main concerns of Fundamentalist Ulama is to avoid useless bloodshed in the name of Islam. On the contrary, Jihadists believe that violence is unavoidable and that Islam cannot thrive without recourse to Jihad, defined in terms of combat (qital) or killing and subduing infidels.
Tartusi, a major Jihadist intellectual, believes that Truth cannot be established unless there is violence and bloodshed: “How is it possible to promote Jihad without spilling a single drop of blood? [He then quotes the Sura Repentance, verse 111]…. Do you want the domination of this religion without sacrificing a single drop [of blood] in the path of Allah (fi sabil illah)? This is a stingy attitude beyond any measure! Do you see, Doctor [Qaradhawi] the defense of the Right against the Wrong without spilling blood?”9
From the Jihadists’ point of view, violence is the major means to achieve Allah’s purpose on earth. There is a ruthless war between right and wrong that cannot be escaped if the Muslim community wants to maintain its dignity and honor: “If the Umma wishes dignity and life, it should engage in Jihad for the sake of Allah, and there is no alternative to it than Jihad. Be happy or unhappy whoever is concerned, this is what hundreds of religious texts say from the Koran and the Traditions of the Prophet, which assert the war between Right and Wrong.”10
Any compromise with modern life is rejected in the name of the purity of the faith and loyalty toward the Word of Allah and the Prophetic tradition:
