“Shhh—wait, what do you mean?” said Gershwin.

“Do you think I don’t know what happens on your visits with the pastor?” asked Nique. “It’s weird that she doesn’t know. I mean, her only son is the biggest queen in the Shadows. I don’t think your mother’s gonna think it’s funny that you’re keeping her crush warm.”

“Nique, stop talking nonsense,” said Gershwin. “Please, people around here think they know what’s going on, but do they really? And you, ma’am, I think you need to be more worried about your weekly dates at Byron’s Shebeen.”

“Wow, you two should get Oscars for your performances. Your mom playing the holiest of church sisters and you playing the straightest man living in the Shadows. Bravo, that’s all I have to say,” Nique said, trying to deflect attention away from her and Byron.

“You know, sometimes you really talk shit. Just come in and don’t make any noise,” said Gershwin. “But wait, what do you mean she’s playing a role?”
