Chapter Seventeen

~ Clint ~

“Hartley, Walden.” Our Chief yelled across the bullpen.

“Yes, sir.”

“Active scene at Hammersley Business Park on Hatfield. It’s your Medium’s office.” He said, pointing to me.

“Shit.” I grabbed my phone, and Terry grabbed his keys. “Do we know who? Is she −?”

“No, her security guard. Hank called it in. His guys just got there, and as did an ambulance. I know this isn’t a homicide, but I want you on this since it’s your girlfriend. Just collect evidence and interview witnesses.” Chief called out as we ran out.

“Will do.” Terry yelled back.

We hustled to his car and then down the road. I shot off a text to Jo.

“You, okay?” Terry asked me.

“Yeah, but I hope she wasn’t there.”

“Yeah.”

My text sounded.

“It’s Jo. She says she wasn’t there, but she was with Hank and watched it on the security cameras in Hacker’s office.” I ran my hands over my face. “Damn.”

She was such a soft-hearted person and I know she would have a lot of guilt, blaming herself for this attack. I’d do the best I could to reassure her.

It felt like forever before we arrived at the scene. The ambulance was pulling away, and I saw Hank, Al, Eddie, and a few of Hank’s other guys milling about. Al had a sobbing Jo in his arms. I rushed out of the car and straight to her.

When Al and I locked eyes, he simply nodded to me, turned her to me, giving her back a light pat, then nodded once more before turning to speak with Terry. He was a man of few words, but he cared for Joanna and for that I was thankful.

“Oh, Clint, this is all my fault!” She collapsed into me.

I knew she would be beating herself up. I whispered to her, trying to reassure her.

I could only vaguely hear what Hank and his guys were saying to Terry.

“Four men in all black ... Careful to keep their faces turned from the cameras ... Catfish was unconscious but breathing.” I know I missed bits, but that got me a picture of what happened, at least.

I knew Catfish or Percy for years. He had been one of Hank’s “enforcers” and then started working security as he aged. He was good at getting the truth out of people and could fight with the best of them, but against four younger men, that might be a tough hill to climb for someone in their 70s.

I’d always like him. He had a rough upbringing, had some adventures, and worked for Hank. He was an interesting guy if you could get him talking, especially over a beer or two.

Hank’s activity was just this side of legal, so we mostly looked the other way. As long as we weren’t finding body parts or whole bodies, we assumed he was staying within the law as he promised.

If you asked me, I assumed he’d simply gotten good at not getting caught, but I hadn’t been able to prove anything. Plus, he had been good to Joanna, so I was thankful for that.
