Chapter Eight

The next morning, while Kell made French toast and bacon, I took Baxter out to the walled garden to take care of business. My phone buzzed, which was odd considering it was still before eight o’clock.

“Simon?” Of all the people to be calling at this hour, I didn’t expect to hear from my cousin.

“Hi, Cassidy. Hey, I really need to talk to you. Dante won’t leave me alone until I do.”

“Dante?” I echoed. “You mean dead ancestor privateer Dante?”

“Yeah. After he helped me stop that killer pirate ghost, we’ve sorta gotten to be besties.”

“Wait. Not before coffee,” I protested. Baxter trotted back inside, ready for his breakfast. Kell noticed my phone and gave me a questioning look.

“I need all the coffee to deal with this,” I mumbled. Kell pulled out the biggest mug we had and filled it to the brim. I put the phone on speaker and set it on the table.

“It’s Simon,” I told Kell.

“Hi, Kell. Tell Cassidy you two need to come up and spend some time at the beach. Vic and I would love to show you around.” Simon loved his adopted home of Myrtle Beach.

“That would be fun,” Kell agreed. “What’s up? I’ve got to warn you—she isn’t caffeinated yet.”

“I’ll take my chances,” Simon replied. “Dante won’t shut up about ‘evil in a box.’”

Kell mouthed, Dead Dante? I nodded.

I got comfortable and took a sip of coffee. I suspected I might need the whole pot by the time we were done with the call. “All right. I’m fortified. Spill.”

“I talked to you a while back when we had those murders that seemed to be linked to an old pirate treasure,” Simon began. I remembered. Simon’s boyfriend, Vic D’Amato, is a homicide detective with the Myrtle Beach Police Department, and Simon often works with the police as a consultant when cases get weird.

“I’m not sure I ever told you how that all got resolved, but the short version is, in order to push a really dangerous relic that was trapped in a shipwreck deeper into the ocean, I had to let Dante’s ghost possess me so he could use his water magic. We kind of hit it off, and he’s hung around since then.”

Kell just gave me a blank stare, like he’d blown a brain fuse. I had to admit, that was a lot to process, even for me.

“Okay,” I said, very slowly because the coffee hadn’t really kicked in yet.

“Hey, psychic medium here,” Simon reminded me. “And anyway, Dante’s pretty cool, considering he actually remembers the American Revolution. And he’s got some powerful water magic—he just needs to be in a body to use it.”

I knew that gifted mediums like Simon and our friend, Alicia Peters, could allow a ghost to possess them during a séance or a private reading. That didn’t make the idea any less creepy.

“Go back to what you said about ‘evil in a box.’” I gulped my coffee and held out the mug for a refill. Kell obliged and handed it back.
