Michael ran his fingers over it. Warm. Well, it is a hot day. The feeling was gone as suddenly as it came.

“Wonder who that was?” Amanda touched it too.

A spark. A sharp prick in his fingertip. Michael pulled away.

“Shit. What was that?” Amanda cried out at the small flash. “I’ve got it. MA. You know, like Mum. Like an old sailor’s tattoo. He loves his Ma.”

“Or Marcus Aquila.” Abigail studied the letters.

“Eww.”

“No, then it would be M plus C inside the heart,” said Maria. “Marcus for Cecelia.”

“Who cares? I’m going up.” Gabriel climbed the rusty ladder followed by Maria, Amanda and Alice. Abigail and Michael shared a look.

“I don’t know what it is,” he finally said. “This place feels-”

“Weird. I know what you mean. This place has its ghosts.”

They stepped out onto the roof. A rusted metal hatch lay rotting where it had been flung half a century ago. The antenna tower loomed behind them and in the other direction - the open ocean.

“Yo- So- What d’we know?” was how Amanda started the meeting, down to business, or so Michael thought.

“I, ah-” was all he got out.

“Our illustrious leader would like to speak,” she bowed her head.

Michael tried to ignore her. “First of all, we need to know what’s really happening in the world today?”

“Well, no one has claimed responsibility for the Terrible attack on China yet,” Gabriel read from his tablet. “Other recent bombings around the world have been claimed by extremist groups, some linked with wars in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. There are currently open wars taking place on nearly every continent. Dozens more armed conflicts, civil wars.” He rattled off. “And there’s almost a mass-shooting a week in the States. We’ve had a Tsunami and an Earthquake already this year. Millions dead. With the increasing global population, these disasters are only going to kill more people. And don’t forget over twenty thousand people die EVERY DAY just from starvation. Also, twenty-one thousand children die every day. Evv-ryy-day.”

“Is it just me or is the world getting worse?” asked Amanda.

“Or have we only just started taking notice?”

“Oh, and don’t forget several thousand nuclear weapons in existence, a third of which can be launched at a moment’s notice.”

“Bloody hell.”

“If there is intelligent life in space watching us right now, they’d be thinkin’ we’re freakin’ crazy.”

“Nice input Amanda.”

“What are we doing about all this? What does the Infinite do to help?”

“We send money and aid to natural disasters,” said Abigail. “Dad talks about it sometimes and it’s in the meetings.”

“The Infinite have lots of charities,” added Maria. “It is why we have so many big businesses around the world, to fund them.”

“That’s only part of the financial picture,” said Gabriel. “It’s not just charity.”

“Well, what else?”

“Funding, for all this.” He waved his arms around, toward the other island.

“To do what,” snapped Amanda.

“They travel a lot,” sighed Maria.

“Yeah for business.”

“That’s just a cover.”

“What do they say in the meetings?” asked Michael.

Gabriel cleared his throat awkwardly, pretended to play with his tablet.
