It was so late by time they reached the hotel—she hadn’t even caught the name of it— that nobody sat behind the reception area, at least not at the moment. It had to be late. Like three-in-the-morning late. Besides, Elise had rented them rooms already.

And she’d entered Headache Land. Big time.

“Oh, my god,” Leslie started as soon as they got through the rotating glass doors. “She can’t be alive. We all saw her die. She went down with that cage.” Her face had paled so much, her freckles looked brown. Janelle knew why. Andrina had almost killed her more than once, and all to get Janelle to bend to her murderous brainwashing. It wasn’t a pleasant memory for either of them.

Janelle wanted to sweep her up in a hug and let a flood of tears come out, but held back. If there was one time she had to keep it together, it was now. Breaking down and freaking out when she’d found out about the whole Tempest deal sure hadn’t helped things any two months ago. It had only made things worse. A lot worse.

Hank led them up to the room they were staying in without a word. The news seemed to weigh down on his back as he climbed a flight of stairs. Voices floated out of Room 212 as he knocked on a door near the end of the hall. Her dad and Elise were already here. Somehow, they’d gotten away from the fire department and dodged interviews about the lava in their backyard tonight. Which was fine, because none of them had time for that right now.

Her father wrapped her in a hug as soon as the door opened. It felt warm, safe, just for a second. Janelle held her tears back as he pulled her into the room. “Where were you, honey? I was worried sick.” His voice was tinged with anger. In other words, she’d messed up.

Her uncle opened his mouth to say something, probably about how she’d lied to his face about taking Carlos home, but Janelle cut him off by sucking in a huge breath. Okay. She was Tempest High Leader. She needed to get her act together and stop being that scared girl. “I have some bad news that we might need to add to my statement. Sit down.”

Elise plopped down on one of the beds and Hank joined her. Leslie made her way to a chair in the corner of the room. It all felt very cramped all of a sudden as four pairs of eyes gazed at her. No one blinked.

It took about half an hour to explain everything: Kenna, Pele, her fake parents, Gary, the possibility that Andrina might have survived and was looking to use Kenna to erupt a volcano somewhere. The words swept over her dry throat as she spoke and sounded like a mumble to her. Janelle had gone numb with shock at this point. By time she finished, Elise had turned green and her dad turned his gaze to the floor.
