None of this is right.

None of this is safe.

I can feel it in my bones, like my subconscious is screaming at me, but I just won’t listen.

Pushing forward, we move closer and closer to the large magical wall that blocks us. Closer to the beings that would love nothing more than to kill us. To rip our flesh from bone for no other reason than to fill their bellies.

Mara’s hand in mine is the only thing that holds me together, that keeps me from screaming at the top of my lungs. From grabbing her and forcing her out of this realm.

My eyes are frantic as I take in the landscape, no longer glaring at Dorian in distrust, but instead looking to him for guidance. For confirmation that we aren’t walking to our death. But I will find no consolation from the demon.

No one can offer that which does not exist.

Dorian’s words as he turns to explain what we must do next feel distorted. Just noise to my ears. He directs us towards a large group of lemures ahead, and I watch as my new family pulls their weapons out, looking at me expectantly. I have no idea what is happening, only that this isn’t right. None of this feels right.

A lemure leaps at me, its charred skin black from its self-torture. The eyeless form shakes its head, the nostrils on its face breathing deeply as it takes in my scent. I swing my blade like it is an extension of me, the most natural thing in the world. Blood sprays across my chest as I slice through its flesh. The wisps of its soul—or possibly magic—release into the air.

A loud groan sounds behind me, and I turn to see one of the giant stone monsters moving toward our group, attracted by the death of the lemures. I watch in awe as Dorian leaps onto the back of one of the gigantic creatures, moving stealthily and quickly. He cuts the creature in several places, bringing it down to its knees so that Amari can thrust a blade into its throat.

It feels like music blaring in my ears, the bass thumping so loudly that I can’t concentrate. Blood and ash cloud my vision. I hear my name screamed behind me, and I react too slowly. As I turn, I feel pain lancing through my shoulder, and I take in Mara’s look of terror. Dorian is on me in a second, and I can’t decide if he is helping or attacking me.

Maybe he is finishing me off; I wouldn’t blame him.

The distrust I feel for him; where does it stem from? The fact that he is unknown? That he is one of the Void. That he clearly is drawn to Mara?

Something that feels like acid burns into my skin, in the same place that I just felt incredible pain, and I look down in time to see Dorian rip one of the eyeless creatures from me. The pain is overwhelming, and it burns.

Burns in a way that I have never felt before.
