Brietta was going to explode.

Okay, so maybe she was being dramatic, but with half of Oregon’s magicians gone on summer vacations, her dating pool was shallow, and she hadn’t gotten laid since the Fires, Feasts & Frolic Festival. Now she sat in a cabana beside a magical pool on her lawn, trying to appreciate the beautiful birthday party her coven had planned, but all she could concentrate on was her sexual frustration.

Draining her cocktail, she looked at Skyla and raised her eyebrows. “Almost two months.”

“Since what?” Skyla asked, stripping down to her bikini.

“Since I had sex,” Brietta answered.

“Ah...” Skyla dove into the pool then swam to the edge, smoothing her hair back while finding Brietta. “Is that why you invited Dez?”

By Dez she meant Desmond, one of Brietta’s ex-boyfriends. They’d dated when she was sixteen and had broken up before she was seventeen. Then he moved to California to go to college. They remained friendly enough, but he stood on her lawn for only two reasons – he was available, and she was desperate.

With a wrinkle of her nose, she shrugged and confessed. “Yeah. He’s home for summer break. Speaking of… where is he? He’s supposed to be getting me a drink.”

She searched the lawn and found him halfway between her and the bar, empty-handed and speaking to Kegan. She huffed her displeasure at being put off. Then she grabbed Skyla’s drink and downed it, too. “Why are they even talking? Keg doesn’t like Desmond.”

“He doesn’t?” Skyla asked, pushing off the side of the pool into a backstroke. “Why?”

“I don’t know. He just never has anything to say when Dez is brought up in conversations, like he doesn’t know him.”

“He isn’t acting like that right now.”

Brietta grinned and held out a hand. “That’s what I’m saying.”

“Oh, yeah,” Skyla giggled. “You know what I want?”

“What’s that?”

“A bird, a pretty blue one, or maybe a green one. Ooh… or a yellow one.”

Brietta laughed as she relaxed into her comfy chaise and closed her eyes, listening to Skyla go on about her future pet while awaiting Desmond’s return. No way would Brietta get her own drink. This was her party, damn it, and she didn’t invite Desmond so he could entertain others.

Skyla had stopped talking and started playing with Brayden. Brietta could hear them squealing and splashing. Then she felt a nearby presence as the light hitting her eyelids darkened. “Did you forget about me?” she asked.

“No, but I think Desmond did.”

Brietta opened her eyes to find Kegan standing over her with two drinks.

“Happy birthday,” he said, handing over a pink cocktail.

She sat up and accepted the glass, sipping as she glanced at the bar. “Thanks. But why are you bringing me this when I sent Dez to get it?”

“Because he got distracted by the buffet.”

Sure enough, Desmond was at the food table, chatting with Drystan while filling a plate. Brietta rolled her eyes and lay back. “Figures.”

Kegan’s lips twitched, and Brietta scowled. “Don’t laugh.”

He stifled his humor and sat on the foot of the chaise.
