CHAPTER FOUR

CADENCE

I stand next to the fireplace of Colt’s parents’ cabin, my arms folded across my chest. I’m trying my hardest to show him I’m not afraid of him, but I can feel myself shaking. I made the right decision though, and I’d do it all again to keep Elijah safe. I’m not exactly sure what my plan is, I just knew I needed to appease Colt at the moment. I don’t want to think about what would happen to Elijah if Colt reported what happened the other night to the police, or worse, my mother. She already has it out for him and if she had any sort of proof that something is going on between us, she’d make his life hell. Before I got in his vehicle, he was smart enough to take my purse and phone. Luckily he didn’t go through it and find the knife I stashed in there haphazardly.

“I won’t hurt you, Cadie,” Colt tells me as he moves over to the wet bar and pours us both a drink of some dark liquid. “I’m not like him. I’ll treat you right. I saw the way he was pawing at you like a wild animal last night.” He turns to look at me, the nefarious smile he’d given me at the diner is gone and is replaced with faux sympathy. I see through him now, and I don’t know how I missed it before. I suspect I was always so enamored by Elijah, that I never paid close attention to anyone or anything else. But Elijah was right about my so-called friend all along. He is a fake asshole.

I’m not sure how much leverage I have here. But I know that defending Elijah, what we were doing in his truck, or acknowledging that I willingly took part in every second of it will only make my situation worse. But when Colt’s eyes rake up and down my body like he’s ready to pounce on me, my logical brain goes out the window.

“I don’t want to have sex with you, Colt,” I blurt the words out. “I don’t love you like that. You’re my friend. That’s it.” The word friend falls flat, and it must sound that way to him too because he sneers at me like I might have unwittingly been his enemy all along.

He downs his drink and then bangs the glass against the wood top of the bar. As he crosses the room to stand right in front of me, I feel bile rise in my throat. This is it. He’s lost his mind, and there’s no coming back from any of it. We were never close like I am to Elijah, but I would have called him a friend. I thought he was a decent guy, and I feel stupid for protecting him from Elijah when he wanted to knock his head off for simply being my friend.

Colt reaches out to stroke his hand against my hair and I suck in a shallow breath, my whole body freezing up in repulsion.
