Chapter 8

I couldn’t get away from Maine fast enough.

My mother had shown me once again, why not sticking around was the right decision to make at 17 years old. I’d left for college and not returned until I met Danika who apparently had Maine ties. I was willing to do anything for her. Even if it meant going back to a place I despised. Her brother was against the idea of her being involved with another woman so he and his buddies arranged to have me “converted” by attacking me. Thankfully I was a track athlete back in my prime and always a fighter so I was able to escape without any real physical damage. That of course, says nothing about the emotional and mental scars.

I can’t believe Savannah wants to marry that moron knowing what he did to me and I cannot believe my parents… my father approved of their marriage. I suppose I don’t mean that much to them after all. That’s fine. If Danika and Daniel want to play dirty, I’ll play. And I’ll start by buying the 90% shareholding of the company up for grabs before taking full control of the other 10%.

Sophie had gone over the contracts again and found two loopholes that were previously missed. It’s going to be a rather interesting meeting. There aren’t many stakeholders interested in a HollSui reject, so the competition isn’t at all stiff and my company is a forerunner.

I haven’t quite decided what to do about Danika just yet but buying her company is definitely a start. She’s an investor on record which means very little to me as I’ll take the company off the public share listing the second the deal is complete. All dividends will be paid up to existing investors and then perhaps I’ll strip the company down to a shell and watch it die.

“It’s not Danika’s company. She loses nothing if you do that.” Sophie had said when she heard me musing out loud to myself.

“Make her answer to you. Increase her pay so she won’t want to leave but make her life miserable.”

That was definitely something to consider.

Madrid is a beautiful place. I’ve been here many times both for business and pleasure. It’s very rare that I get to have both at the same time. I seem to be able to get both with Sophie. It was never that way with Danny. Danika’s interest in my company was purely self-serving. She wanted to go as far to the top as she could using my name and connections but she never really cared to collaborate in ways that mattered. I don’t know how I missed how poisonous she was for as long as I did, but I’m going to make her pay for all of it.

When we arrived in Madrid, Sophie seemed displeased with having her own room. I’m not thrilled about it either, but we have to be smart. The world is already small enough and everything could affect a deal as sensitive as this one.
