Chapter Five

Carmen

I woke up naked and on top of Blaze.

His solid chest had been a perfect pillow.

The sun warmed my skin. Leaves and branches surrounded me, scratching, tickling, and gently digging into my arms and thighs. A bird flew by my head and chirped. Another bird on the branch near my foot answered the other’s call.

I slowly looked down and screamed.

We were on top of a tree seventy feet in the air.

Blaze woke up and tightened his grip on my waist. His muscles flexed under me as a breeze blew through his curls. “What’s wrong?”

He gazed up and then down, confusion glazed over his eyes.

“We’re in a tree.” I quickly wrapped my sore legs around his waist and held on to his shoulders. My muscles in my arms and legs ached from last night’s overuse, but I held on, afraid that I would drop to the ground if I let go. “I can’t fly like you. Are you insane? How long have we been sleeping here?”

He flashed a smile, displayed perfect white teeth, and leaned back on a huge branch.

A tiny squeak came from it. I tensed my shoulders in fear, wondering if the branch could hold us anymore. Squeaking had to be a bad sign.

Are the branches sturdy enough to climb down?

“You’re an elf.” He shrugged. “I figured you would love to sleep in a tree.”

“Those are light elves.” I stared longingly at the safe sandy ground below us and clung to his broad shoulders. “I’m a dark elf.”

“I apologize.” He moved his hands to my breasts and pinched my nipples. “Have you rested enough?”

I yanked his hands away. “Absolutely no more sex.”

He sneered and closed his eyes. Ten seconds passed and he opened them again. His chocolate pupils targeted mine. “Why no sex?”

“Blaze, I’m scared of heights.”

“You weren’t scared last night.” He sat up. Each taut row of golden muscle contracted.

I opened my mouth searching for response.

“You don’t want to have sex. I understand.” He swept my curls over my left shoulder with his hand. “It’s just hard to be near you and not make love to you, especially when you’re naked. You’re beautiful even when you sleep. I watched you this morning before I drifted off.”

Why is he saying this?

I avoided his eyes.

He was an incubus demon, not to be trusted, but he’d given me his blood, saved me from the Boto brothers, and hadn’t lied to me.

I can trust him.

Maybe.

I had to be careful. My husband had said nice, romantic things and then he disappeared, leaving me alone with our child, a massive debt that I couldn’t pay, and a new ability to grow venomous fangs.

“Carmen,” Blaze whispered, bringing my attention back to him. “What’s wrong? You’re tense. I thought I’d released all of your tension last night.”

The edges of his lips curled into a smile. His eyes exuded heat as they left my face and traced my curves. I shifted in his lap.

“Fuck,” he mumbled. His staff stiffened under my thigh, ready to begin another session of passionate sex.
