Chapter 10

When Coral and Trevor arrived back at the camper, she immediately opened her laptop to the event spreadsheets. She had a few hours to organize what needed to be done before Saturday’s event, and she wasn’t going to be around during normal working hours to inform her staff and contract workers of the myriad details that had to be covered before the wedding dinner. More importantly, diving back into the familiar kept her from obsessing over what she faced at Trail Hiker’s training facility tomorrow and the two following days.

“You didn’t waste any time getting back to it.” Trevor walked past her.

“I can’t afford to. You heard Claudia. I’m at TH’s beck and call for the duration, but especially for the training days.” She’d signed the nondisclosure agreement as well as several other documents that gave her temporary security clearances, as needed, and all the benefits afforded any TH contract employee. She’d nearly wept when she’d realized that all of this, the huge responsibility of his government’s trust in him, had always been on Trevor’s shoulders. If she’d known, would she have been a better partner to him?

“Don’t you think you need to eat first?” Trevor was in the small kitchen area as she worked at the kitchen table. The same place where they’d made love—no, had incredible sex—only hours before. It was as if a switch had flipped since then, the way Trevor was treating her. With respect and a sense of pride, she sensed. But not as a lover.

She should be glad that the sex option was off the table, pun intended. But she still felt it every time their eyes met, every time she looked at him. Standing in the camper over her counter made her imagine all the ways they could enjoy themselves, naked, in the kitchen.

This had to be the first part of her training—ignoring her personal feelings for the sake of the job. For the first time, she had compassion for what Trevor must have gone through during the last years of their marriage.

“I’m not really hungry. I lost my appetite when I realized that I won’t have a minute here or with my event team, except at night, once I begin my three-day training period. The wilderness instructor said I should plan to sleep out with the class from Thursday to Friday. Luckily the new chef hire has everything prepped, so I won’t be scrambling as much on Saturday morning.” She tried to suppress the shudder of distaste that ran up her back. Glamping it in the trailer was one thing, but being outside with only a bedroll didn’t appeal to her.

“You don’t have to do any of it that you don’t want to.” His tone was noncommittal, carefully neutral.

“Oh, but that’s the kicker, isn’t it? I didn’t want to be involved in any of the ROC garbage, and yet, here I am, almost six months after they blew up my home and barn. No one in Silver Valley asked for ROC to come in, but they’re affecting life here in the worst ways.
