GODS’ REALM

Ember crouched against the wall of a sturdy outbuilding across from the manor that the goddesses Inara and Cortina used as a home. Set high up on one of the abundance of mountain ranges proliferating the gods’ realm, the surprisingly modest manor was smaller than some of the middle-income homes from where she grew up in Rockton South Dakota, though the extravagant grounds were far more impressive than the manor. Rows of fruit trees and berry shrubs lined the walkway to the manor and a cool spring with the clearest sparkling blue water ran between each row, all perfectly new as if created just the day prior. There were no crumbling walls or weed-filled overgrown gardens anywhere.

In fact, no signs of typical weathering were present at all, as if the elements and time had no effect on any of the material objects at all. Having adjusted the magic shroud after Inara’s alarming comments, she was certain the altered magic kept her hidden from the gods as she followed the two goddesses when they left the manor grounds. Still, she did her best to stay as far back as possible. Inara didn’t seem to be bothered by her presence the first time she had been caught, but trying the patience of the powerful goddess of magic wouldn’t be helpful in her pursuit of escaping the bizarre world she found herself in. Especially seeing as Dathac was still on the hunt for her. A drastic increase in activity among the gods the last few days likely meant the deathgod had even enlisted the help of a few others to find her.

She had been following Cortina while also dodging Dathac for what felt like months now, but the young goddess rarely left Inara’s side now and if Ember had any hope of enlisting the oracle’s help, she needed to talk to her alone. Every now and then the goddesses would go their separate ways and Cortina would eventually open a portal, stepping through to another part of the gods’ realm, one Ember hoped was secure and far enough away from the other gods for her to make contact. Each time the oracle goddess opened one of the portals, it snapped shut behind her almost instantly, leaving Ember no way to follow, but as Cortina and Inara went their separate ways ahead of her, she rushed closer.
