She and Lilly were slicing lemons in preparation for a party that night at the bar, but she might as well have been sucking on them with the sour pinch she knew her face was making. She couldn’t help it though, Lilly’s summer camp penpal, a boy who Lilly just loved to talk about, was coming all the way from Sacramento with his family to visit her.

It had been mostly fine when Lilly had mentioned that she had made a friend she liked to write to. But when Lilly began telling her how much she had in common with him, like their favorite movie, ‘Raising Arizona’, she found herself not liking him one bit. She knew it was jealousy she was experiencing, but she could never voice that to Lilly.

"Hey Mitch,” Lilly said, breaking her out of her sullen thoughts.

"Yes?" Mitch said, trying to relax her features.

"Want to come meet Taylor with me?" Lilly asked with a smile.

Mitch set down the knife, truly taken aback by the question until her simmering jealousy boiled over. "Why would you want me there? Don't you want to spend time alone with him?” she asked, emphasizing the last word as she dropped her head back down and resumed cutting.

“Um, first, he’s going to be here with his family. Second, he actually wants to meet you," Lilly said.

Mitch’s head shot up. "Why would he want to meet me?"

Lilly was quiet for a long moment and Mitch was growing impatient. “Why would he want to meet me?” She asked again evenly.

“He wants to meet the girl I have a crush on," Lilly said in a rush.

Mitch’s knife slipped. "Ow, shit!"

"Mitch!" Lilly said in concern and came around the bar, grabbing a clean rag and running it under water quickly before taking her hand and pressing on her wound. But Mitch didn’t feel it.

"You… you have a crush on me?" she asked, her voice going up an octave on the last word.

"For a long time, Mitch," Lilly said quietly, finally looking up into her wide, disbelieving eyes.

"You don’t like Taylor?” she asked, still trying to wrap her head around what Lilly just told her.

"Not in the way I like you,” Lilly said with a shy grin. Their eyes met and held for a long moment as each felt the significant shift in their friendship.

"I think that's enough pressure on my finger, now.”

Lilly laughed awkwardly and pulled the rag away to see the cut wasn't too bad. "Let me get a bandaid.”

She disappeared into the staff bathroom while Mitch stood there, stunned. She’d had feelings for Lilly ever since she’d walked her to math class that first time and had struggled mightily to hide them for the three years they’d been friends. Not in her wildest dreams had she thought Lilly might feel the same.

Mitch sat down on the stool, trying to take it all in. When Lilly returned though, she got right into Mitch’s personal space, causing her mind to go fuzzy. Lilly gingerly wrapped the bandaid around her finger and in a move that made Mitch suck in a breath, leaned down and kissed it lightly.
