Nineteen

The next morning found Mac asleep on the floor, curled up like the kitten still sleeping on her bed. When she moved the pain in her lower back was excruciating. Her hip ached where she had laid on it all night and every muscle felt as if they were too short for her body. Her bones cracked when she rose to her feet. It had to be later in the afternoon because the sun was already on its down hill slide to the west. No time to waste, after last night Mac knew what she needed to do. She sat on the edge of her bed feeling a little hung over and petted Angel who stirred at her touch. “Hey sleepy head, time to rise and shine.” The kitten bounced off the bed and rubbed against Mac’s legs before she left, looking at her on her way out as if to say, “Good morning, I’m hungry, follow me.” A self centered little thing she could be.

The phone book provided Mac with all the information she needed. Cup of coffee in hand, she dialed the number. Ring, ring, four times, five times she was about to hang up when a woman answered. “Hello?” the woman on the line said in almost a whisper.

Now what am I suppose to say? Mac hadn’t thought about that one and she was never any good at thinking on the fly.

“Hello?’ The woman whispered again.

This time Mac flustered and almost stuttering said, “Um, hi, my name is Mackenzie Rogers and I… um… I am sorry to bother you but I was wondering… um… if I have the right party.” Well that sounded about as stupid as possible. She’s going to think I’m an idiot.

“What can I help you with dear?”

Mac wondered if she was doing the right thing. Maybe she should just hang up and forget this. Why bring back hurtful memories for this woman? Then Mac felt a squeeze on her shoulder. Charlie had just given her approval. “I really don’t know how to say this or where to start. So I am just going to spit it out. Are you any relation to Charlie Nelson?”

There was silence and for a minute Mac thought the woman hung up.

“I am her mother.” It sounded as if she were crying.

“I’m so sorry to bother you really I am. It’s just that I live where your daughter use to live and I have a package that’s been sitting in my house for quite sometime now. It’s addressed to your daughter but has no return address. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. I just thought if it was something of importance … Anyway I did some digging and found your name. I took a chance that this phone number was the right one. I didn’t mean any harm. I only wanted to do what was best.” She tried to explain everything the best she could without babbling.

“You said your name is Mackenzie?”

“Yes Mam, Mac for short.”

“Well Mac, you did the right thing.
