“Those woods are worth millions,” said Spruce Market owner Rose Delano. “They ought to look for who’s been itching to cut them down.”

James read the article twice before he lowered it to his lap and stared ahead.

“Your New York birth certificate is fake,” Isaac said quietly. “There’s no legitimate record of your birth, there or here. But the birthdate on that certificate is the date Ruth died. Do you get it?”

James shook his head, not in response, but in despair. He understood. He believed it. He knew. He’d known since Hunter first hinted at it. And he would have found the proof himself. But on his own, in his own way, in his own time. Not like this.

“James. Ruth was your mother. That baby they never found, that was you.” Isaac said slowly. “It’s all there. You barely have to read between the lines. Robert was abusive. Ruth got pregnant unexpectedly. She took Grace and ran back home. Went into labor. Something went wrong. She died. Grace picked you up and ran, and she never looked back.”

And what about Beau? If Grace wasn’t James’s mother, then James saw no reason to believe that Daisy Ann Woodstock—the name on Beau’s birth record—was Beau’s mother. And if all the other suspicions that had sprouted up this afternoon were bearing out to be true, he saw no way to keep ignoring this feeling in his bones. No chance of denying it any longer.

But he wasn’t talking about Beau with Isaac.

“Great,” James said tonelessly. “Thanks for coming all this way to tell me I’ve got two dead moms. Can you start driving?”

Isaac made a small, pained sound, closing his eyes and pulling a hand down his perfectly chiseled face. “That’s not it. It’s not even the worst part. The team on this, they’ve got sources on the investigation, and…”

“What?” James snapped. “Stop dragging this out!”

“It’s Domino.”
