Tomorrow Run – Day 58 – August 17

5800 km/3,603 miles run – 1495 km/930 miles to go

It was a tough decision, but Sol had to go, and the only one who could really do it was Al. He stewed over it in the bathtub as he soaked after the 58th day in a row of running.

Sol had taken over the run and the crew hated him. He said who could eat and drink what and when and where; only Howie could have the filtered water. The Elks were his number one priority, and as in all charity-plus-record attempts, a battle is fought. The crew felt Sol was winning, and it had already cost them over a day of time. Now, Sol was determined the route be changed again when they hit British Columbia, and it was no small change. “84 kilometres extra!” Jesse yelled from the living room. Al was quiet for a moment and then made his decision. “We’ll do it. We’ll do the Okanagan Valley, but we’re going to dump Sol.”

The Trans-Canada Highway enters the mountains and British Columbia along the Coquihalla Highway. To take a left before that stretch and head down toward Kelowna for the Elks would add another day to the run and force several additional climbs into the equation. Jesse was furious. “You’ve got a runner who has just run over 3,000 miles for your charity and you want to start adding on distance and climbs? Are you crazy?!” But Howie’s word was final; they would do the extra distance, but on the 59th day of the journey, Sol was summarily dismissed.

As the road turned the next morning and Calgary came into sight, silhouetted against the setting sun, spires of office buildings rose like beacons. It was a welcome sight, but behind them, roaming even higher in the sky like dark clouds, were the Rockies, the final foe between Howie and the sea.
