“Don’t ye have a bloody bottle of anything to drink in this house?”

Listening patiently as Colin foraged through every cabinet in the library, Christopher sat with his boots propped on a leather ottoman, his head resting on the seat back as he pressed a cool glass of lemonade against his temple. His head ached. He had just started to drift to sleep when Colin’s voice jerked him awake.

Over the rim of his glass, he watched his brother stalk across the room to the desk. “You’re not going to find anything in there, either.”

An older version of Ryan, his younger brother’s physical resemblance was the only attribute he shared with any of the family. Colin was the least mechanical person Christopher had ever known. But he was a good father, at ease with people, and a genius with numbers. Unlike David, who’d abruptly abandoned the family business to go into the priesthood, Colin was D&B’s chief financial officer.

“And there be no sin in staying sober today, Colin Donally,” a woman’s voice said from behind Christopher. Fiercely protective Meg. Colin’s fiery wife rustled past and thrust a glass of lemonade into her husband’s hand. “Since when have the Donallys needed fortification to get through any day? Where’s your backbone?”

“Withered to dust,” Colin grumbled. “Aye, like Johnny’s and Ryan’s. Do you see them around? Probably gone for respite at the local pub.”

Christopher closed his eyes and continued to massage his temple. Alex’s presence was like a thick ambient fog circulating through the house. He didn’t know if he felt annoyed by his family’s lack of charity or in perfect harmony with their mood. For now he settled on neither. Accepting that he was not in his right mind, he elected political prudence over the impulse to defend himself against yet another family member.

Besides, Meg was ardently protective of Rachel.

His gaze attached to the new glass of lemonade his sister-in-law just handed him. “So when are ye going to marry Rachel and be done with this silly nonsense?” she said pointedly, her green eyes flashing.

“Meg,” he warned.

She plopped two small fists on her hips. “And don’t ye be blowin’ smoke in me face, Christopher Donally. What’s everyone supposed to say or be thinking, with you bringing that…woman here?”

“Nothing, Meg. You’re not supposed to say a bloody thing.”

So the conversation fell off and drifted to the reports he had lying on his desk, a subject he wasn’t particularly interested in, either.

Gathering up the glasses, Meg stopped at the window. “Ryan, Johnny, and Rachel are not getting befuddled at the local tavern,” she announced. “They are outside on the terrace. Brianna brought her highness down.”

Christopher walked to the window. Standing head and shoulders above his diminutive sister-in-law, he looked over her red head out the window.

Colin’s and Johnny’s boys had stopped their croquet game to stare. At first he didn’t recognize Alexandra. Her fair hair was pinned loosely on her head and fell in curly wisps around her profile. But it was the outrageous gown she wore that captured his attention.
