What better way to conclude a shitty night than a nice chat with Anthony Van Horne. I really couldnât think of anything worse. Except for the time I replaced Father Robertâs toothpaste with a tube of vinyl glue. You can imagine how pissed off he was. I kept my distance for quite a while after that.
Jay Ann Curling escorted us through a few hallways, then down a few flights of stairs until we got to an underground area that turned out to be some sort of internal security headquarters â a room full of monitors and electronic equipment whose real purpose was hard to discern.
From there, a trusted employee of the Van Horne family could monitor the perimeter of the residence and access points to the house day and night. It was basically like being inside the Batcave.
âGood evening, Mr. Thorne,â Anthony Van Horne greeted me through clenched teeth, the ever-present cigar between his fingers. He was wearing a black satin robe that made him look like an obese samurai. In his left hand he held a cloth handkerchief, which he used to wipe the sweat from his damp forehead, despite the rather chilly temperature.
âGood evening, Mr. Van Horne. Nice little spot,â I muttered, looking around.
âIâm glad you like it. Andrew, please show Mr. Thorne the same video you showed me.â
Andrew, a lad in his forties with curly hair and love handles, didnât need to be told twice. Keeping his eyes glued to the monitor right in front of him, he began fiddling with his mouse.
Kate and I exchanged questioning glances, not quite sure what to expect.
âOkay, it starts here,â Andrew finally said, pointing to the screen. âThis is Ms. Rebeccaâs room at exactly 3:29 in the morning. Watch.â
We all moved a bit closer to get a better look at the monochrome images captured by an infrared camera. Thirty or forty seconds passed without any action and I was already getting impatient.
âI donât see anything,â I grumbled, much to the homeownerâs disappointment.
âThere, look now!â Andrew exclaimed, almost euphoric.
The surveillance footage showed a kind of shimmering mist creeping into the room through the cracks of the window. At that point, not surprisingly, the recording became riddled with interference, as if some electromagnetic field was messing with the closed-circuit camera electronics. Despite the static and intermittent visuals, the video provided evidence that was particularly difficult for the Van Horne family to digest. Even though there was no sign of an intruder in the room, it was clear to everyone that at exactly 3:30 AM on November 2nd, someone had entered their home, making a mockery of their much-touted security system.
We saw the diffuser topple violently to the ground without anyone touching it. We observed Rebecca levitating a few inches above her bed, while Kate, shortly after arriving on the scene, was attacked and brought to her knees by an invisible and vicious presence. Finally, with horrified eyes, we watched the window shatter even though nothing had struck it.
âYou!â Van Horne snarled, pointing at me with his sausage of a finger.
