CHAPTER 20

SECOND FRONT: WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW?

Second front now!” is the title of chapter 18 of The Hinge of Fate, echoing the popular slogan of 1942. The Americans and Russians argued that the Second Front could be opened only across the Channel in France. The British claimed this was impossible until 1943 and successfully pressed the case for North Africa in 1942. Landings in Algeria and Morocco eventually took place on 8 November. Throughout 1942–1943 there was also a deeper debate about whether a Second Front would be needed at all. Proponents of “strategic bombing” asserted that this could break Germany’s will to fight and avoid the need for a major land operation. The time, place, and very necessity for a Second Front were vital issues for Churchill in 1942, and they lie at the heart of The Hinge of Fate.
