Could it really be so easy? The men I killed had been wearing several crystal hearts each, and I had smashed them all. Will he really forgive the loss of so many for the return of a few? Either way, I have chosen this path. I can do nothing else but go with him. I fall in beside him and we walk towards the mansion. Slowly.

“We haven’t been introduced. My name is—” I begin.

“Who cares?” says the other [Sorcerer], the one I barely noticed. He’s wearing a blue striped suit. He’s a thin-faced man with an ever-present sneer. “You stand in the inestimable presence of Overlord Markrest. Now that’s a name worth remembering.”

“Now, now, Speaker Bisset. That’s no way to speak to a guest,” says the old, terrifying Overlord Markrest.

“If I may—” I start again.

“You may not! You think you’re a [Knight] and that gives you a right to speak to us? A queen ant is still just an ant. In Rosenhall the great Overlord Markrest had a dozen [Knights] and each of them was worth a hundred of the likes of you.”

“Then you’re also—”

“Shut up, I say!” snaps Speaker Bisset.

Overlord Markrest sighs. His gaze goes vacant, and he speaks softly. “When we first caught the scent of this realm, we thought it was a hidden paradise. An overripe fruit, ready to be plucked. Imagine. A world with no levels. In such a world, surely a band of [Sorcerers] could live like kings. Like more than kings, we could create a society where we’re respected, where our law is obeyed! We didn’t know. How could we have known? This world is a desert. There’s nothing here but savages. Privated desert primitives fighting over a few scarce drops of water. Where I thought to become fat, I instead became lean.”

Markrest slows our pace even further, to a frustrating degree. We have not moved ten feet this entire time. He stares at me expectantly. Does he want me to speak again so that Speaker Bisset can interrupt me?

“So you—”

Speaker Bisset gasps in outrage. “Don’t you dare interrupt Overlord Markrest. Pray to whatever gods you worship in gratitude for the chance to even hear such enlightenment.”

Overlord Markrest continues as if he hasn’t noticed either of us speaking at all. “Getting here was difficult. Getting back, nigh impossible. Not because we couldn’t do it. Because we weren’t allowed to. I know you see me. I know you know my power. I, Overlord Markrest, was not allowed to go. He wouldn’t let me. You know of whom I speak, yes? The Demon King. I awaited his pleasure, but you! You’re going to defeat him.” He smiles sadly and shakes his head.

“How did you—?”

“Because you’re not the first,” says Speaker Bisset. “You’d be dead by now, you know that, right? Except you’re not, so maybe that old fool really did croak five years ago.”

“The cat is away, so you know what that means for us mice,” Overlord Markrest says with a wry smile. “Time to get the hell out of here.
