CHAPTER 16

PIPER

The next few weeks, I managed to avoid Colin’s texts, only giving brief answers, hoping he’d get the hint. I’d let us get too close because it hurt each time I saw his name on my phone.

My resolve to create space between us didn’t stop me from playing his games on TV in the background. The soft din of the crowd was soothing. I couldn’t cut the tie completely. It hurt too much.

Colin wanted me to pursue my dream. I just wasn’t sure I could do it without feeling like the person my parents always accused me of being—selfish.

A few weeks after Amelia was born, Elle stopped into the shop with her baby in tow. The customers in the shop congratulated her. Even though she’d only lived in the town a short time, she’d made friends here. People cared about her.

“Let’s go to lunch. You have Jordan covering for the next hour.”

I sighed. “Okay.”

I picked up the heavy car seat, carrying it for her out to the sidewalk, popping it into the stroller attachment she had. “How are you guys?”

“This is weird, but my sister’s here.”

“Alice?” She’d pressured Elle to return to L.A. to do a spin-off reality show. Elle had been the villain on the original show, and Alice wanted a chance at fame. When Elle moved here for a fresh start, she didn’t tell anyone about her past. When Elle refused to be on the show, Alice told Gray about her stint on the TV show. They almost broke up over it.

“Yes.”

“Is she staying with you?”

“She is. She was really messed up when she called me. She told me she had a bad breakup with her boyfriend.”

“A bad breakup? I don’t think you owe her anything after what she did to you.”

“It’s more than that. I’m just not sure what she’s hiding or dealing with. I think she’s changed or at least feels bad about how she treated me.”

I shook my head.

“I want to give her another chance. She’s been amazing with Amelia.”

“I’m glad for that.” I hoped it worked out for her. Elle missed having a good relationship with her sister.

“How’s Amelia sleeping?”

“I get a four-hour stretch most nights, which is amazing.”

I knew she’d been struggling with the constant waking in the middle of the night. She’d been teary-eyed and exhausted the first few times I visited her. Gray tried to help, but she was breastfeeding. There was only so much he could do. He changed the baby’s diaper, took the baby when she wouldn’t sleep, and supported her.

When we were seated, the waitress took our drink orders and fawned over Amelia. When she walked away, Elle asked, “How are you sleeping?”

I resisted, wincing at her observant question. I’d hoped she’d be so exhausted and wrapped up in Amelia, she wouldn’t focus on me. “Not great. I’ve been getting a lot of headaches.”

I’m sure it was from the lack of sleep. I was prone to migraines when I was stressed. I accepted the contest assignment, but I hadn’t talked to Elle.
