Collaborating with Internal Stakeholders
Traditionally, supplier diversity involved partnering more with regional buyers and business unit leads to act as company representatives at regional advocacy organization outreach events. If a company takes this path and implements this practice, supplier diversity should ensure that these fill-in extensions are well versed on supplier diversityâs objectives, and they should come prepared to speak intelligently on upcoming procurement opportunities and on the requirements for participating in the RFP (request for proposal) process. An RFP is a detailed specification used to procure complex goods and services and is frequently used by procurement organizations. There is nothing more discouraging to a minority business than to travel to a conference and wait in long lines only to arrive at a corporate vendorâs booth and encounter someone who is uninformed, disinterested, or just pulling a shift. Such a connection does not benefit the minority business enterprise (MBE) and can create a negative perception of a brandâs commitment.
Although much has changed over the years, some things have stayed the same: Corporate policy and C-suite engagement remain essential to a successful supplier diversity program. An effective and sustainable supplier diversity program must engage, obtain support from, and align with C-suite executives. A robust program requires a senior leader who has co-ownership of the program and who is fully invested in its success. When organizational changes are underway, an effective supplier diversity leader ensures the adoption of a strong corporate policy and prepares a compelling business case that links supplier diversity to the companyâs revenue generation.
