“I understand your concern, but this is the way it is,” Principal Scow said as he leaned on his cane a little more with every step he took.

Miss Mays groaned. “Just because it has been this way since forever doesn’t mean we can’t change it. You are the principal, you can simply stop enrolling them.”

“Then where would they go?”

“Another school? Home where they belong? I don’t know. The class fives just aren’t cut out for hero work and not once has a Sidekick actually helped a hero save people.”

“You may be right, but they are still homo-magis and it’s at school they develop their enhancements so that they can use them to better the world. You know as well as I do that barely two per year ever go on to be a Star Hero’s Sidekick.”

“So, what’s the point, they can develop their enhancements at home, or at a less influential school. We have a standard to up hold.”

“We have a duty to all homo-magis. Ella, what would have happened if you hadn’t developed your secondary enhancement? I believe super hearing is a class five power, isn’t it?”

Anne squeezed Ellen’s arm. “She was a class five?”

Miss Mays stopped walking with Principal Scow and turned to look towards the tree line where Ellen and her friends were hiding.

Anne closed a hand over her mouth.

Principal Scow didn’t stop. “Come along, Ella, it’s late and my leg is not taking this walk well.”

“You need to walk more often,” she replied, frowning into the darkness before turning and jogging to catch up to him. “These walks are supposed to be twice daily and if I hadn’t come to collect you, would you have even bothered the once today?”

“Perhaps.”

“Liar,” she teased as they stepped too far away for Ellen and her friends to make out their words.

After another minute, Anne removed her hand and took a calming breath. “That was too close. I really should remember she has that super hearing.”

“Let’s hope she can’t still hear us now. Can you believe it? She was a class five,” Benjamin repeated, looking off towards the shadows of Miss Mays who now walked with Principal Scow’s cane and next to her, a giant cat strolled on three legs.

“Aww, he morphed and we missed it,” Anne complained as she squinted to try and see them better in the distance. “It would be so cool to see him do it, even with one leg missing.

“Come on, Miss Cofee will be waiting,” Ellen said, and they continued to the main building.

Miss Cofee was waiting at the lifts on the main floor, yawning and swiping away at her tablet.

“Sorry we took so long,” Anne offered and Miss Cofee glanced up, still swiping at her screen. “Miss Greenbow mentioned a student with an injury?”

“Me,” said Ellen, flinching as she moved her neck a little and it seized.

“How did it happen?”

“I walked the perimeter of the school looking up.”

Miss Cofee scratched at the side of her head as she pondered what Ellen had just said.
