Graduation Shmaduation

“QUINN BATES,” MR. Banks, the principal who spent the last two years hating me, said into the microphone.

The crowd clapped while I watched on with a smile as Quinn marched up on stage, I heard Chace call out over the cheers of the crowd, “Go, Quinn!” Those two played such a huge part in my life, and I didn’t know if either one of them will ever really know how important they were to me. Things were going to be a lot different next year without them by my side. But it’s because of them that I am the person I am today. Each of them played a part in giving me the confidence to be who I wanted to be.

In a moment of solidarity, I watched on as Chace and Finley raised their fists in the air, Quinn slowly mirroring them while still on stage. I hopped to my feet and let my loud mouth get the best of me. I clapped my hands around my mouth and slid my tongue between my teeth, creating a shrill whistle. “Get it, girl!” I screamed from the pit of my stomach.

That was the height of the entertainment for the most part. Graduation was just about the most fuckin’ boring thing I had to endure to date. I just wanted it to be over with, have that little piece of paper in my hand, give Mr. Banks the bird, and party. So when it was my turn to head on stage, I knew I couldn’t contain myself any longer. My ADHD was officially in control as I snatched the diploma from his hand and launched myself from the front of a stage and tucked my body in tight to perform the most epic back-flip in history of back-flips. Landing on my feet, I was so amped I let out a loud party boy call before slapping hands with classmates who held their hands up as I jogged back to my seat. My legs jumped with excitement as I tried to contain my enthusiasm for the last bits of the Pomp and Circumstance.

When it was finally over and they announced us the graduates of 2014, I hopped to my feet, threw my cap in the air and removed my robe before it had come down and hit the ground. People were still clapping as I started walking out toward the parking lot. I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and sent a group text out to Chace and Quinn. I didn’t bother ever texting Finley; while the girl was hotter than the center of the earth, she wasn’t much for a friend. Besides, the other two were attached to her hip in one way or another. What information they had, she had. Simple as that.
