Chapter Eleven

Before they left Maria’s room, Nathan had another idea — one he thought Robin would enthusiastically endorse. He called Robin, gave her Maria’s cellphone number, and had Robin call Maria right away. The call lasted only a few minutes. Then he let Maria loose.

With his ear to the door, he heard her rush down the stairs, crying out for her father. Miguel called out from his office, but Maria continued her outburst. Moments later, Nathan heard the thumping of a frustrated father rushing downstairs to console his distraught daughter. Nathan counted to ten before slipping into the hallway.

He moved with grace and confidence, stepping silently toward the office door. All the while, he could hear Maria’s sobbing as she fed her father the story. “Nick called me. He said he was just using me to get to you. Father, I’m so sorry. I should never have doubted you.”

“He called you? When?”

“A few minutes ago.”

“Let me see your phone.”

Nathan stepped by an open door that had been closed the previous times he had been in this hall. Peeking in, he spied an elderly man in a wheelchair. An IV drip connected a bag of clear fluid to his arm. The man wore a crimson robe and powder blue pajamas, and though the flashing light of a television cast shadows on the walls, the man stared out the window instead. The old man’s features identified him with ease — Miguel’s father.

From the stairwell, Nathan heard Miguel. “You must start trusting your mother’s judgment and mine. We know better the kind of man you need in your life.”

As Nathan reached the office door, he eased it open while picturing Maria’s big eyes and little girl pout as she handed her phone to her father. He would have his men trace the last call, probably with the help of phone company employees on his payroll. In about ten minutes, his men would discover Robin’s phone. They would report what they knew — that the call came from a burner phone which originated from Bennie Bracato’s compound. He would be furious, but Miguel Marquez was not a man of passioned reactions. He had to plan his retaliation. Plus, his daughter was crying, and what kind of father would he be to walk away from her at that moment?

This gave Nathan ten to fifteen minutes before they returned to the second floor. He entered the office and closed the door with a soft click. Because Robin had messed with their online lighting system, Miguel had been busy working on his real computer which sat open on the desk — actually on top of the dummy laptop.

“Robin?” Nathan said after calling on his cell. “All ready?”

“Can’t wait,” she said. “First thing I need to know is if his OS is Apple or PC.”

“Looks like Windows to me.”

“That’s a PC. Great. Makes this easier. Now, do what I say — click where I tell you, type what I tell you, exactly as I tell you.”

“I got it. I know that I don’t know enough with computers.
